LIC Flea And Food

Starting this weekend and running every weekend this summer, Long Island City is home to the newest flea and food market in NYC, LIC Flea and Food. The market is conveniently just one block away from our apartment in a large open lot next to an industrial building... surprising since we have always said that nothing ever happens on our end of Vernon Blvd. Well we stand corrected! The heavy foot traffic around our apartment and up Vernon Blvd was quite the contrast to the norm. Although we're leaving the nabe (officially recognized as short for naighborhood by Merriam-Websters dictionary) in 2 weeks, I hope this market helps bring some much needed shopping to LIC anyway.

While there we enjoyed some good food and found many items for sale from local artists and vendors that we might'v bought if we weren't moving (and didn't already have too much stuff!), all while taking in the views of the Manhattan skyline and the summer breeze coming from the East River. Pup came along and enjoyed sampling a little of everything off the ground and giving passing dogs the stink eye.

We finally committed to and booked a moving company to help us on July 1st. We did a lot more packing this weekend, I think we're up to 19 large boxes, and our apartment is starting to feel like Manhattan Mini Storage. We also bought a new couch this weekend that will be delivered the first Saturday that we're in our new apartment, July 6th. Maybe I'll load some pics of it in my next post... :)

Oh ya, I just remembered today that a week or two ago Jen and I had a celeb sighting. While walking Pup down our very own Vernon Blvd we spotted actress Meredith Scott Lynn sitting near the window at one of our favorite restaurants, Blend. For me anyway, she's one of those actors that's in a lot of things, but I can't place her in any one particular thing. I looked her up on IMDB and, just to name a few, she's starred in the movies Legally Blonde and Night At The Roxbury and the TV shows Days of Our Lives, Weeds, NCIS, and Law and Order: LA.

Great Funkin Birthday

Other than having to work on my b-day, it was an overall great day. Dinner last night was perfect and I got so many great gifts so thanks everyone!

I received an e-card and this hilarious video from my sister-in-law, Jackie. Thanks S.I.L.!

Zippity Doo Dah

We NYC Rexrodes have been very busy (hence the almost two week break in writing) with much of the same things I mentioned in the last post. So much so that this post may end up reading like a continuation of the last one.

First, for the most exciting news, we were approved for our “1.5” bedroom apartment in Park Slope/Gowanus, Brooklyn and signed a lease on Thursday! Now that we have that extra little space for guests I’m sure the floodgates of visitors will open. Now that we have officially found a place to live we have really kicked the moving mode into high-gear.

Over the past few months we’ve been gathering items that we no longer need to donate to Goodwill. Our pile grew much larger than we could ever try to carry or transport using public transportation. If only we had a car… Enter Zip Car. Zipcar is a membership-based car sharing company which provides reservations to its members for about $15 per hour or $75 per day. Zipcars are parked everywhere around NYC. There are about five locations with multiple vehicles within just a few blocks of our apartment (and our future apartment). The greatest part is that gas, parking, insurance, and maintenance are included in the price for up to 180 miles. For two people that only need a car every once in a while, it’s perfect.

Saturday was our first time renting with Zipcar and next time we may do things a little differently. For one, we won’t wait until the night before to reserve. Although our little Sentra was a sporty special edition, cars that are cooler and more functional (like hybrids and hatchbacks) are snatched up first. Also, because we waited so late to reserve, and there was a reservation right after us, we could only get the car for two hours. This made our trip feel a little too… zippy,  and I barely got the car back to the parking garage in time.

While out on our Zipcar trip we managed to visit Goodwill, drop off our laundry at the laundromat, and buy an area rug that we later painted. They Painted a rug!?  Yup, that’s right. We painted an 8x10 rug and it turned out really well. It’s rolled up to be out of the way right now so you may have to wait until we move for the big reveal.

Lastly, as it turns out, what I said in my last post about the amount of taxes deducted from my paycheck not being so bad was false. You see, my first paycheck was only payment for one week of work and therefore not as large as my full two-week check. This week, though, I got my first full paycheck and Uncle Sam got greedy. I was like, what!? I’m definitely asking for a raise the second I’ve been in that place a year.
